Form vs. Function

Form or function: art or utility?  If you are on this web page, you may love wood as much as I do.  Your interest may be in finding the most beautifully figured wooden bowl and setting it on your mantle; or you may want that bowl to have a real purpose, a function, or......utility.

Does artwork have any real utility?  And can that functional piece "turned" from that magical, ancient tool called a lathe, be beautiful?  You must decide.

The strange round form that brought you to this spot  hangs on my shop wall.  I made it partly to practice a turning technique that I had seen in a magazine.  Now it reminds me of that balance between form and function.  Only after handling a bowl - eating from it - oiling it and using it over a period of years, will it gain a patina that cannot be achieved from sitting on your mantle.  Enjoy!
